What Is Coronary Artery Disease ?

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a condition in which the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle (coronary arteries) become narrowed or blocked, usually due to a buildup of cholesterol-rich plaque. This reduces blood flow to the heart, which can lead to chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, heart attacks, or other heart complications.

Who Is At Risk Of Coronary Artery Disease?

Certain health conditions and lifestyle factors can significantly increase your risk of developing heart disease. These include:

  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Tobacco use
  • Kidney disease
  • Family history of heart disease

But risk doesn’t stop there. There are also often overlooked factors that deserve attention, such as:

  • Prediabetes
  • Sleep apnea
  • Steroid use
  • Recreational drug use
  • Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus
  • Ethnic backgrounds

If you have any of these risk factors, a proactive heart health check could make a real difference.

Heart Health Matters for Women, too....

Women need heart health checks just as much as men — and in some cases, even more attention is needed.  As heart disease in women can be more subtle or go unrecognized.

Symptoms may include..

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Discomfort in neck, jaw or back
  • Chest pressure (not always pain)

Regular heart health checks can help detect problems early, especially for women with risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease.
