Comprehensive CardiAC care

Holter (Ambulatory Cardiac) Monitor

A Holter monitor is a portable device used to continuously monitor and record the electrical activity of your heart over a period of time, usually 24 hours. It’s a type of ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) that helps doctors detect heart rhythm problems that may not be noticeable on a standard ECG acquired when the patient is at rest.

If the irregular heartbeats are infrequent, a longer term monitor called a heart bug recorder may be needed. Some personal devices, such as smartwatches, offer electrocardiogram monitoring. Ask your health care provider if this is an option for you.

Why is it done ?  A health care provider may recommend a Holter monitor if you have

  • Palpitations
  • Unexplained fainting / dizziness
  • After stroke where we suspect irregular heart rhythm disorder
  • After heart surgery or for a heart condition that increases the risk of arrhythmias
