implantable loop recorder

An implantable loop recorder is a small cardiac monitoring device placed just under the skin of the chest to continuously track heart rhythm over long periods, often months to years. It is designed to detect intermittent arrhythmias that may not appear during a standard ECG or even a 24–48 hour Holter monitor. Because it records automatically and can also be patient-activated during symptoms, it is particularly useful for investigating unexplained fainting, palpitations, or suspected silent rhythm disturbances.

The device works by constantly analysing the heart’s electrical activity and storing recordings when abnormal rhythms are detected, such as very slow heart rates, pauses, or fast irregular rhythms. Modern loop recorders can transmit data wirelessly to the healthcare team, allowing remote review without frequent clinic visits. This long-term surveillance significantly improves the chance of capturing rare events that occur unpredictably.

Insertion is a quick, minimally invasive procedure usually performed under local anaesthesia. Patients are usually discharged within few hours after the procedure.  Recovery is typically rapid, with only a small incision required. Patients can continue most normal daily activities, including exercise and travel.
